What Is Deuterium-Depleted Water?

Deuterium-depleted water (DDW) is water whose deuterium concentration has been reduced below the level commonly found in natural drinking water. The defining characteristic is hydrogen-isotope composition—not pH, mineral content, total dissolved solids or the bottle material.

Mdrn-Life DDW is a hydration product, not a treatment. This page explains the category, measurement language and product specification without making disease-treatment claims.

Start with hydrogen

Deuterium is a naturally occurring stable isotope of hydrogen

The most common hydrogen isotope, protium (¹H), has one proton and no neutron. Deuterium (²H or D) has one proton and one neutron. That extra neutron makes deuterium heavier, while remaining a stable—not radioactive—isotope.

Concentration

What does “ppm deuterium” mean?

PPM means parts per million. It is a practical way to express the concentration of deuterium in water. Natural-water values vary with geography and source; a representative drinking-water range is often around 145–155 ppm.

Mdrn-Life uses 5 ppm as its production target. A production target describes the intended specification of the manufacturing process. A laboratory result describes the particular sample identified in that laboratory document.

The category difference

DDW is not simply another name for purified, distilled, alkaline or hydrogen water

Several water-processing terms describe different properties. A water can fit more than one category, but one property should not be used as proof of another.

Deuterium-depleted water

Defined by reduced deuterium concentration. Verification requires hydrogen-isotope analysis.

RO or distilled water

Describes purification/separation processing. Those labels alone do not state the final deuterium concentration.

Alkaline water

Describes pH/alkalinity characteristics. Alkalinity does not establish isotope composition.

Hydrogen-rich water

Describes dissolved molecular hydrogen. Molecular-hydrogen content and deuterium concentration are separate measurements.

The defining property of DDW is isotope composition. Other water attributes may coexist with DDW but are analytically distinct.
Production

How is deuterium concentration reduced?

Producing highly depleted water requires specialized isotope-separation processing. In Mdrn-Life’s current process, vacuum fractional-distillation rectification is the core isotope-separation stage, supported by additional conditioning, electrolysis, filtration, UV and finishing steps.

Ordinary purification measurements such as TDS or pH cannot establish the deuterium concentration. The manufacturing process creates the target; isotope analysis is what verifies an identified sample.

Verification

How do you verify that water is actually deuterium depleted?

Identify the sample

A useful report should show the sample, field ID, lab ID or report number so the measurement can be tied to a specific submitted water sample.

Read the reporting unit

Laboratories can report hydrogen-isotope results as δ²H relative to VSMOW and, in some reports, a ppm concentration.

Inspect the original report

Published laboratory documents provide more information than a generic “lab tested” badge because they expose dates, method/reporting language and actual results.

Science boundary

Composition evidence and health evidence are different questions

A laboratory report can show the isotope composition of a submitted water sample. A biological study can investigate what deuterium depletion may do under the conditions of that study. Neither automatically proves the other.

Current DDW research includes laboratory, animal, review, observational and limited controlled human work. The evidence does not establish Mdrn-Life DDW as a disease treatment or prove that one particular ppm level produces a specific clinical outcome.
